Castleton Garland

This event takes place on the 29th of May each year unless the date falls on a Sunday.
The Garland King and his consort parade through the streets of Castleton followed by the band and children dancing, there is a
stop at each of the six public houses. The small posy "Queen" is removed from the Garland before it is hauled onto the Church
tower. The "Queen" is laid at the war memorial. To end the evening the children perform may pole dancing.
This custom may be to mark the return of the monarchy with Charles 11 or a Pagan fertility rite to mark a new season of growth.
